A pair of roster moves were made today, impacting the Braves Single-A affiliate, the Augusta GreenJackets. Lefty pitcher Samuel Strickland has been placed on the 7-day injured list, while righty pitcher Darling Florentino was promoted from the FCL Braves to the GreenJackets.
Regarding Strickland, the IL placement now makes sense given he was on track to start for Augusta in Friday night’s game versus Carolina. In his place, former 2018 international signee Jordano Perez made the spot start and pitched rather well overall. Strickland – the Braves 19th-round pick last year – has been solid in his two games so far this season, making one start and one relief appearance out of the GreenJackets bullpen. The 23-year-old Birmingham, AL native sports a stingy 1.08 ERA in 8 ⅓ total innings in 2022, and he’s coming off a decent four-inning start from back on April 30 in which he allowed one run from four hits to go with a pair of strikeouts. As a four-year starter at Samford University, Strickland accrued a 3.56 ERA in 255 innings as a college player.
You may have heard of Florentino as he’s been in the Braves system for going on five years after being signed as an international free agent back in 2017. The now 20-year-old was originally brought in as a third baseman, though after hitting just .207 with a .598 OPS in 116 career games as a pro, it appears the organization transitioned him to the mound in 2021. Last season the righty made five starts and six relief appearances for the FCL team, and despite struggling mightily with walks (9.1 BB/9), he still managed to put together a decent 4.74 ERA in 24 ⅔ overall innings. It looks like Florentino is coming straight from extended spring training, so with Augusta this will be his first games of 2022.
