Several roster moves were made by the Mississippi Braves on Wednesday, including the promotion of former Rome pitcher and the Braves top pick in 2020, lefty Jared Shuster…
Shuster, 23-years-old, has spent all of 2021 thus far in High-A Rome, where he’s compiled a 3.70 ERA / 4.27 FIP in 58.1 innings, to go with 11.2 strikeouts per nine and 2.3 walks. In my Braves 2021 Midseason Top 30, I ranked Shuster just outside the top 10 as the 11th-best prospect in the Braves system. And now that he’ll face more advanced competition in the upper-minors, that ranking will most likely continue to rise.
The news regarding the players headed to the injured list is unfortunate. Indigo Diaz has had a spectacular season so far, even cracking my aforementioned Top 30 at no. 19 as he looks like a potential big league closer. Nolan Kingham has had a roller coaster of a 2021 campaign, dominating in Double-A before performing badly in Triple-A. Kingham had just recently returned to the M-Braves, with hopes of bouncing back from a rough stint with Gwinnett. Sean McLaughlin is a solid reliever in the system, but at 27, is a bit old to be considered a prospect. McLaughlin was maintaining a 4.76 ERA in 34 innings so far this season. And lastly, outfielder Jefrey Ramos has struggled mightily in 2021, seemingly hitting a wall against Double-A pitching after showing positive signs back in High-A in 2019. My hope was that Ramos could turn his season around down the stretch, but his IL stint will definitely put a damper on that.
Congrats to Shuster for the well-deserved promotion!
